Shepherd Works also has two psychologists, Cathy and Christine. Both have over 15 years’ experience each and offer a range of beneficial therapies for patients including hypnotherapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, mediation, mindfulness and other psychological interventions. These can be very helpful therapies for patients with issues such as stress, depression and anxiety. Dr Sue Shepherd is an Advanced Accredited Practising Dietitian and Accredited Nutritionist who graduated with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Health Promotion and post graduate Masters in Nutrition and Dietetics. She specialises in the treatment of dietary intolerances and has coeliac disease herself – she lives and breathes all good tastes gluten free, both personally and professionally!
Sue was diagnosed with coeliac disease whilst undertaking her Masters Degree to become a dietitian. It changed her career path – but she believes only for the better! Since being diagnosed with coeliac disease, Sue has maintained a strong commitment to educating people with special dietary needs.
Although only 41 years of age, Sue is recognised internationally as a leading expert dietitian in the area of coeliac disease and irritable bowel syndrome, having completed her PhD research in 2008. She previously worked as senior lecturer at Monash University and is now Senior Lecturer for La Trobe University Department of Dietetics and Human Nutrition. She is a clinical researcher and an invited speaker at national and international medical conferences.
Sue created a highly successful form of fructose malabsorption diet in her private practice in 1999. Subsequently she went on to become a member of the research team which developed the dietary management approach that has revolutionised the management of Irritable Bowel Syndrome - the Low FODMAP diet. Her contribution to world-first research earned her the Gastroenterological Society of Australia’s Young Investigator of the Year Award in 2006 - the first non-medical health professional to win this Award. She has won many professional awards, including a Dietitian Association of Australia’s Award for Achievement for Excellence in Contribution to the Profession. Sue has also been awarded the prestigious honour of State Finalist for Telstra Businesswoman of the Year in 2009 and again in 2012. And impressively, Sue was recently included in the Financial Review’s 100 Women of Influence in 2013.
Sue’s passion for promoting good nutrition extends beyond the research field. She has written 12 cookbooks of which the first three were self-published best-sellers. Included in this impressive range is her cookbook, “Gluten Free Cooking”, published by Penguin Books, which won the “Best Health and Nutrition Cookbook in Australia” Gourmand (Cordon Bleu) Cookbook Awards. Fuelled by her absolute belief that a dietary condition is an invitation rather than an obstacle to good eating, her collection of recipes proves that having a dietary condition, such as gluten, FODMAP or lactose intolerance, coeliac disease, fructose malabsorption or irritable bowel syndrome does not mean having to miss out on the delights and adventures of a good food life. Sue regularly performs cooking demonstrations on stage at food festivals and Expos, showcasing her Gluten Free and Low FODMAP delights in an engaging and informative style.
Sue is also the director of a busy private dietetic practice (Shepherd Works) with a team of 15 dietitians and two psychologists, specialising in gastrointestinal nutritional conditions, such as coeliac disease and irritable bowel syndrome. She is the consultant dietitian for the Medical Advisory Board to Coeliac Australia, a dietitian representative on the Research Committee of the Gastroenterological Society of Australia, and is a Fellow of the Rome Foundation. Sue has authored over 20 medical journal papers. She is on the Editorial Advisory Board for “Healthy Food Guide” magazine. Sue was the host of the world’s first gluten free cooking program, “Gluten Freedom” and has previously worked as the resident dietitian for TV morning program “9am with David and Kim”. She is a regular media spokesperson for print and radio commentary on dietary intolerances.
Sue was also the Event Organiser for the biggest Gluten Free Food Expo held in Australia. First run in 2006, it broke records at Melbourne Exhibition Centre for attendance figures for a first-time show, with over 10,000 people attending in one day. The Show is run annually, showcasing all great tastes, gluten free from over 100 Exhibitors.
Sue has pioneered the world’s first low FODMAP-dedicated food brand, with the launch of her “Sue Shepherd” range of food products. These products are all FODMAP Friendly (low FODMAP) and gluten free. They are made in Australia and have no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives.

Dr Sue Shepherd is an Advanced Accredited Practising Dietitian with 19 years’ experience. She graduated with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Health Promotion and post graduate Masters in Nutrition and Dietetics, and in 2008 completed her PhD research into aspects of coeliac disease, Low FODMAP diet, fructose malabsorption and irritable bowel syndrome. Sue was a member of the research team that developed the “Low FODMAP diet” for Irritable Bowel Syndrome and her expertise is recognised internationally.
Marnie is an Accredited Practising Dietitian with 17 years’ experience, having completed a degree in Nutrition and Dietetics and worked in the department of Gastroenterology at leading Melbourne Hospitals. Marnie has been an integral part of the team at Shepherd Works for over 11 years, having personal expertise with coeliac disease and Type 1 diabetes. In addition to her expertise in these fields, Marnie is also very experienced in assisting people with dietary advice for high cholesterol, vegetarian eating, nutritional deficiencies, pregnancy and general healthy eating. Marnie currently works from our Box Hill rooms, runs our group supermarket tours and assists with writing the Shepherd Works blogs.
Virginia graduated with a Masters in Science by research and Graduate Diplomas in Dietetics and Education. She worked for more than twenty-five years in many areas of dietetics, including research, food industry consultation and private practice. Virginia has been a dynamic representative on the advisory committees of a number of organisations, informing public health policy and health regulations. She has a wealth of experience to share with her patients. In addition to her expertise in gastrointestinal nutrition and food intolerances, Virginia is very experienced in assisting people with dietary advice for diabetes, PCOS, high cholesterol and general healthy eating. Virginia works from our Box Hill practice.
Anna is an Accredited Practising Dietitian with 13 years’ experience working in both the hospital and private practice settings. She presently works in the Shepherd Works team and also works full time as a Senior Clinical Dietitian at Box Hill Hospital managing gastrointestinal and ICU patients. Anna graduated with a Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics from Deakin University and is presently on maternity leave.
Olivia Wray-McCann graduated with a Bachelor of Food Science and Nutrition from Deakin University and a Masters of Nutrition and Dietetics from The University of Sydney. Olivia has recently returned to Melbourne and we are thrilled she has now joined the team at Shepherd Works. Olivia has a special interest in coeliac disease and the gluten free diet, having worked as a dietitian for Coeliac NSW/ACT in the Coeliac Australia head office in Sydney. Olivia is passionate about ensuring the diet of those with food intolerance is as satisfying and varied as possible. She also has experience in managing people with diabetes, high cholesterol, vegetarian diets and nutritional deficiencies. Olivia works from our Box Hill rooms.
Cathy is an experienced Health Psychologist specialising in treating people suffering from acute and chronic illness as well as chronic pain. In the past 23 years, she has worked using hypnotherapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy and psycho-education with her patients. Cathy began her career as a nurse and also has a background in social work. Being passionate about caring for others and assisting in their wellbeing, she then pursued a career in psychology in 1993. She has completed two Post Grad diplomas, including hypnotherapy at the University of Melbourne. She has been dynamic in the Australian Psychology Society, including involvement in writing frameworks for Worksafe Australia, and she was a key psychologist in the suicide-prevention program, Lifeline for many years. Cathy uses her skills and expertise with patients at Shepherd Works who experience issues such as stress, depression and anxiety. Cathy works from our Box Hill rooms.

Kim is the Senior Dietitian for Shepherd Works and has been with the team since 2009. She completed post graduate Masters in both Health Science and Nutrition and Dietetics after working for seven years as a Home Economics/Food Technology Teacher. She has also previously worked as a clinical dietitian at Box Hill hospital. . In addition to her expertise in gastrointestinal nutrition and food intolerances, Kim is also very experienced in assisting people with dietary advice for disordered eating and the Non-Diet Approach to weight control. Her love of good food and cooking provides her with excellent food knowledge to assist her clients with dietary recommendations. Kim consults from the Box Hill office and runs shopping tours.
Kate graduated with a Bachelor of Applied Science/Health Science majoring in Food Science and Nutrition and a post graduate Masters in Nutrition and Dietetics (Hons). She has had vast clinical and community dietetics experience in Melbourne, Queensland, Western Australia and the Republic of Ireland. Kate has extensive experience in gastrointestinal nutrition and a passion for management of diabetes - Kate has undertaken additional training in diabetes management. She is also very experienced in assisting people with dietary advice for high cholesterol, vegetarian eating, pregnancy and general healthy eating. Kate works from our Box Hill and Blackburn practices.
Lauren graduated with a Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics and Bachelor of Applied Science (Health Science) from Deakin University. In her 13 years working as a dietitian, Lauren has had a long history of work within the sports nutrition, weight loss and food industry. She has experience regarding menu formulation, working with fussy eating in children and is passionate about gastrointestinal nutrition. In addition to her expertise in gastrointestinal nutrition and food intolerances, Lauren is also very experienced in assisting people with dietary advice for diabetes, high cholesterol, vegetarian eating, pregnancy, nutritional deficiencies and general healthy eating. Lauren works from our Box Hill rooms.
Mikaela graduated with a Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics, and in her eight years since graduating as a dietitian, has worked extensively in food industry consultation. Mikaela joined the Shepherd Works team 7 years ago and consults with patients at Shepherd Works on Saturdays. Mikaela works full time at the FoodBank Victoria – an organisation that facilitates supply of food to charities and community groups to then feed those in need. Mikaela is passionate about food security and food intolerances. She works from our Box Hill practice.
Eliza graduated with a Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics and a Bachelor of Science Nutrition. She has worked for many years in gastrointestinal nutrition in hospital based and private practice settings. Eliza has a strong interest in irritable bowel syndrome and incontinence and works at our Box Hill practice.
Christine is an experienced psychologist who has extensive experience with management of stress, anxiety and habit disorders. She utilises therapies including hypnotherapy, relaxation technique, mindfulness, cognitive behavioural therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy and psycho-education with her patients to assist them to achieve their wellness potential. Christine has worked as a consultant psychologist since completing her Doctorate in 2009 and has specialised in child and family psychology for many years. Christine has a teaching background, has worked in the Department of Education, and is a very skilled educator and facilitator of change. She works with the Shepherd Works dietitians to optimise the health and wellbeing of our patients who may be experiencing stress, anxiety, depression or other issues that can benefit from her broad expertise.

Kim is an Accredited Practising Dietitian who joined the Shepherd Works team in 2004. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Hons) and holds a postgraduate Masters in Nutrition and Dietetics. Kim worked for several years at St Vincent’s Hospital, Melbourne, and completed two years’ nutritional research within the Department of Gastroenterology, Box Hill Hospital. She also currently presents the “Great Start Workshop” seminars on Coeliac Disease for Coeliac Australia, Vic/Tas branch. In addition to her expertise in gastrointestinal nutrition and food intolerances, Kim is also very experienced in assisting people with dietary advice for diabetes, PCOS, high cholesterol, vegetarian eating, pregnancy and general healthy eating. Kim works from our Box Hill practice.
Katherine is an Accredited Practising Dietitian who completed a Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics with Honours. In her Honours year, Katherine conducted research on the Low FODMAP Diet. Prior to completing her dietetics degree, Katherine graduated with a Bachelor of Applied Science (Laboratory Medicine). She has had clinical experience within major hospitals in Melbourne as both a clinical dietitian and working within the microbiology departments, and as such Katherine has a strong interest in the intestinal microbiome, complimenting her passion for all aspects of gastrointestinal nutrition. Katherine is presently on maternity leave.
Vikki Wearne graduated with Bachelor of Science from Melbourne University and Master of Nutrition and Dietetics at Deakin University. Vikki has 22 years’ experience as a dietitian working in a diverse range of settings including the hospital ICU environment and many years working in the Northern Territory. Amongst Vikki’s many skills is her specialty as a paediatric dietitian – she completed the Graduate Certificate in Paediatric Nutrition in 2001 and enjoys assisting infants and children (and their parents!) with nutritional issues.
Vikki has recently returned to Melbourne and works at the Royal Children’s Hospital in addition to her sessions at Shepherd Works. Although a paediatric specialist, Vikki has many years’ experience with a broad range of adult nutritional issues too. Vikki works from our Box Hill rooms.
Michelle joined the Shepherd Works team four years ago and consults with patients from our Box Hill rooms in the evening. She also works full time at Eastern Health as a Senior Clinical Dietitian managing gastrointestinal surgery and ICU patients. Michelle graduated with a Bachelor of Applied Science (Health Science) and Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics from Deakin University and is actively involved in committees working to improve the national standards of communication amongst health professionals.
Stephanie graduated with a Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics with Honours in 2011. Prior to joining Shepherd Works in 2013, Stephanie worked at Ballarat Hospital, managing very demanding workload of patients including heard disease, diabetes, stroke, ICU and oncology. Stephanie has a particular interest in assisting patients with eating disorders and is also very experienced in gastrointestinal conditions. Stephanie is currently working overseas for 1-2 years and will join us again on her return to Melbourne.
